Dropping the Real Name Policy, Allowing Anonymous Comments, Site Slimming and Restarting the LCDEV Team

At the upcoming London Commons meeting I'd like to propose a few changes that I'll outline here in order of most-to-least controversial.

Dropping the Real Name Policy

Since the beginning the London Commons has required users to use their real names for their login on the site.  At the time this policy was somewhat unique and many have listed it as a compelling reason to use the site.  The ideas behind this policy were that it would encourage a greater sense of community, and that people would be accountable for their postings.

I was the one who originally put forward the real name policy.  And I know that a lot of people are pretty attached to it.  But after almost 4 years I now think that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.  read more »

London Commons meeting proposal

Hi Everyone,

We need to start having regular meetings for the London Commons again.

Here are some suggested dates.  If you'd like to attend please post in the comments what dates would work for you (feel free to suggest dates that I haven't listed).  read more »

Sign-up for new accounts is working again

Thanks to Trev (McNaughton the Younger, the dark hand behind the Commons), ReCAPTCHA is working again. If you already have an account, all this means for you is the return of short-lived spam posts that will quickly be eradicated by your trusty moderators. For those of you that have been waiting for this moment for the past several weeks, now is your chance to sign up and finally join in to the most profound and insightful discussions on the net.

You can sign up for a new account HERE. Please note that we do require your Real Name be used as your username (something like 'Firstname Lastname', 'Fristname L.', 'F. Lastname' or something along those lines would be acceptable).

This message is brought to you by the shadowy figures of the LC Cabal.  read more »

London Commons Meeting

Apr 9 2009 - 9:30pm
Apr 9 2009 - 11:00pm
Location:
East Villlage Artists Co-op, 757 Dundas St.

The Commons seems to be at a bit of a crossroads. Between the costs of maintaining the site, low user activity and competing commitments on the time and attentions of key members, we need to take a good hard look the site and its viability. With that in mind, we'll be examining options to keep it up and running for the time being.

We're hoping for at least 5 people to show up for quorum. The meeting is open to everyone. I'd ask that at a minimum, all current moderators attend (unless you happen to be in, say, Europe).  read more »

Some clarification on the future of the London Commons

Following the previous blog post from Thomas and the subsequent discussion I realized that the situation might not be as clear as it could be. Here is my attempt to explain things.

For those that don't already know, I am the other half of Figure and Ground New Media. The company belongs to Thomas and I, where for over a year we have been hosting the London Commons website at no charge.

The announcement that the site would be closed and reopened under private management was due to miscommunication between Thomas and I. That's our fault, and we're very sorry for it.

I think it's important to note that Thomas took these actions with the best interest of the site and the community at heart. Under the circumstances he did what he thought was best for everybody, and this should be remembered before anyone criticizes him.

For now the status quo will be maintained. No major changes will happen without first being discussed and approved by consensus at a meeting.

LC meeting...

Hey,

So we need to have an LC meeting to discuss a few things as it's been quite a while since our last one.

If anyone who is interested in attending could post their suggested meeting dates/times/places that would be wonderful.

Hope everyone is well,

PEACE!

rachel
