Slashdot and ZDnet are reporting the existence of the first ever Mac-only botnet. Botnets, normally associated with Windows, are large collections of computers that have been infected with malware and are now under the control of an evil-doer. They are often used to attack websites by flooding them from sometimes hundreds of thousands of infected computers. Another popular use of botnets is sending spam.

Soon spam will be coming from Macs too. The hipsters with their shiny MacBooks are no longer immune to zombification. Not much surprise there, but clearly it's time to stop pretending that Macs are somehow too secure to not require anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
The source of the infection appears to be copies of iWork and Adobe CS4 downloaded from peer to peer networks.
